It’s the second New Year of 2022; the beginning of the 2022-23 School Year.
These tips will help you get off to a great start:
- Create a routine. After the a summer of less than routine days, set up a new routine. Routines offer children security and expectations for their day, week and month. With your children, decide the following:
- what needs to be accomplished every morning before school? and after school?
- what does that look like? and how will make sure it gets done?
- Set expectations. If you have an expectation, state it. What is expected for grades? for chores? for outside activities? marginal time (afternoons, evenings, and weekends)?
- Practice. Practicing morning and afternoon routines, packing and eating lunches, getting to school, bedtimes, etc. helps you discover what needs to be adjusted as well as provides tools for children’s success.
- Sleep and rest. Adequate sleep is essential for your child’s overall health. Find some great hints here.
- Breakfast. Eating breakfast enhances children’s ability to concentrate, retain information and focus. Make your breakfasts easy, quick and healthy.
- Set boundaries for extracurricular activities. There are benefits for kid’s involvement in activities outside of school. Say yes to the activities that work within your family’s time, energy and budget.
- Create a school command center. Have a central location for school calendar, supplies and communications.
- Meals at school. Will your student’s pack a lunch or eat at school? What works best for your monetary and time budget? If packing a lunch, who is responsible? What is included in their lunch? What are their food preferences? When will lunches be made (is it part of the routine)?
- Choose to be present. Now, and throughout the school year. A favorite quote from Christy Wright, “Be present where your feet are”.
Apply a few of these tips to get the 2nd New Year off to a great start!
