At the end of our SYMBIS (Save Your Marriage Before It Starts) coaching, the couple asked, “what is your best advice for married couples”?
After a short hestitation, my answer was two-fold: honor each other’s differences and make your foundation on God’s truth.
It is good advice, but I keep pondering the question as my mind searches and finds other’s words of marriage wisdom.
Is spring the season of love? According to neuroscientist Helen Fischer, maybe so. May kicks off wedding season, from now through fall, with the majority of weddings taking place in September – November. Whether anticipating marriage or have been married for several years, listening and following good relationship advice is crucial to a long-lasting love relationship.
Given the question asked, I began searching for the some of the best marriage advice around, some new, some not so new.
As of today, here are a few of my favorites:
- “Never take marriage for granted. Like one’s home, marriage requires maintenance and attention.” – Peggy Rowe
- “I got gaps; you got gaps; we fill each other’s gaps…Love is absolute loyalty. People fade, looks fade, but loyalty never fades. You can depend so much on certain people; you can set your watch by them. And that’s love, even if it doesn’t seem very exciting.” – Sylvester Stallone as Rocky
- “Great marriages are contagious. If you want one, surround yourself with couples who have one.” – Anonymous
- “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty…” Theodore Roosevelt
- “Be committed” – unknown.
A good marriage is worth the effort. Commit yourselves to the process. Work hard and reap the benefits.
For the love of family (and your marriage),
