A Sunburn, Grace and Mercy

“And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife Eve.”        Genesis 2:21 NLT

One of the most compassionate scriptures in the Bible is when God takes care of Adam and Eve, even as they are about to live out the eternal consequences of their sin. Despite their willful sin, He lovingly took care of their needs .

Leaving for his roofing job, I reminded my son to use sunscreen.  His ‘whatever’ reaction prompted a follow-up text.  With only 40 characters to use, I used my best skills at an abbreviated sermon, and reminded him of his Grandpa’s horrendous struggle with skin cancer. Something that should have motivated him to heed his mother’s advice.

Unsolicited advice usually creates an immediate rebellious response.

That evening, he came to me asking if I would please administer the Aloe Vera gel. As I soothed the gel on his badly sunburned back, I was reminded, ‘God clothed them’.

Adam and Eve were warned, told what to do. Dylan was warned and told what to do. I am warned, and told what to do. We all choose, thinking we can beat the odds.

‘God clothed them’.

God’s character revealed. Grace and Mercy. Even when I blatantly sin or simply refuse to take His advice, he still loves me, and ‘clothes’ me with his grace and mercy.

Questions:

How do you need to clothe your children, spouse, or a friend with grace and mercy?

Do you need to accept who God is, despite yourself?

Accept that He loves you. Accept His ‘clothing’, His grace and mercy.
